I never imagined that a wristwatch would one day become something so personal to me. Until recently, watches were simply something that told you the time. Then I discovered the world of mechanical watches, and something about them captivated me. The idea that hundreds of tiny components could work together, powered by nothing more than the movement of your wrist, felt almost poetic. I started reading about movements, dials, craftsmanship and the stories behind different watchmakers. And somewhere along that journey, I found the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time. Beautiful, understated and mechanical. But what makes this particular watch special to me has very little to do with its specifications.
I come from a humble background. For almost 20 years, I have worked in the IT industry, building my career one step at a time. There were long days, difficult decisions, uncertainty, failures, learning, and plenty of moments when giving up would have been easier than continuing. At the same time, life was never just about a career. I had responsibilities as a son, a husband and a father. Many of the things I wanted for myself had to wait while I fulfilled the things that mattered to the people I loved. Looking back, I realise that much of life is not about one big achievement. It is about showing up, year after year, and quietly doing what needs to be done.
Recently, after nearly two decades in the industry, I reached a professional milestone that meant a lot to me. It was more than a new role or a career move. For me, it represented years of persistence finally coming together. And then my wife gifted me this watch. That changed everything.
It was my first meaningful watch, but more importantly, it was my first watch gifted to me by her as a token of love and appreciation for the journey I had taken. She could have gifted me many things, but somehow a watch felt perfect. A watch measures time, and our lives together have been measured in years filled with responsibilities, challenges, celebrations, compromises and countless ordinary moments that eventually become memories.
Now, when I look at the Cocktail Time on my wrist, I don’t just see a beautiful sunburst dial or the smooth sweep of an automatic movement. I see a young man who started with very little, a son who tried to live up to his responsibilities, a husband who built a life with his partner, a father who wanted to create something better for his family, and a professional who kept moving forward for almost 20 years.
Perhaps this is what makes mechanical watches so fascinating to me. They are not perfect. They have tiny mechanical hearts that beat continuously, they need to be cared for, and they carry the traces of the time they have lived through. In that way, perhaps they are not so different from us.
My Seiko Presage Cocktail Time is therefore not just the beginning of my journey into watches. It is a small reminder of my journey through life. Twenty years of work. A lifetime of responsibilities. One beautiful milestone. And a gift from the person who has been there through it all. Some watches tell time. This one tells my story.
